1. How much will it cost to transfer a vehicle?

The transfer fee is based on the age and amount paid for the vehicle.  If you want to know the fee, please stop in with your vehicle identification number (VIN) or plate number and we would be glad to help calculate the fee for you.

2. I don't have my prebill. Can I still come in to buy my tabs?

Yes, if you are the registered owner, come in with your plate number and insurance information.  We will print a prebill for you.  If you are not the registered owner you will need a signed form from the registered owner giving you permission to purchase the tabs.

3. I have lost my MInnesota title. How do I get another one?

The registered owner needs to apply for a duplicate title.  We can look up the record with the driver's license and vehicle number.

4. I just moved here from out of state. What do I need to do to register my vehicle?

You will need your title, insurance company, policy number and policy expiration date.  If there is a loan on the vehicle we will need your financer's name, street address, city, state and zip code.  We will also need the date of the loan and the odometer reading of your vehicle.

5. How does the "Grace Period" work?

You need to PURCHASE your tabs by the last day of the month you have displayed on your vehicle.  THEN you have 10 days into the next month to put them on.  Law Enforcement can write a ticket if your tabs are not purchased by the first day of the next month.

6. What will you accept for insurance?

You will need to provide the insurance company, policy number and expiration date of your insurance policy.  We cannot sell you tabs without current information.

7. What do I need to bring with me to get a hunting or fishing license?

To purchase a hunting or fishing license, regardless of your age, you must either have your SSN on your DNR customer file or provide your SSN as a part of your license application along with a State ID.  If you have a SSN, but refuse to provide it, you will be denied a hunting or fishing license.

8. I need registration and tabs for my boat, snowmobile or ATV. I don't have a renewal notice. How can I renew?

If you are the registered owner of the recreational vehicle, you need to bring in your driver's license and the registration number off the vehicle.

9. What is REAL ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards.  The Act refers to federal anti-terrorism laws and regulations that control access to the following:

• Federally regulated commercial aircraft.
• Federal facilities requiring identification to enter, such as military bases or nuclear power facilities.

The At prohibits federal agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from accepting cards for official purposes from states that do not meet minimum security standards.

Important Things to Remember

• REAL IDs are optional.  Standard driver's licenses and ID cards will continue to be acceptable for driving and other identification purposes now that REAL ID is available.
• Minnesotans will be able to use their standard licenses and ID cards for federal purposes, including boarding domestic flights, until October 1, 2020.
• After Oct. 1, 2020, a REAL ID, Enhanced driver's license or ID or passport will be required for those wanting to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities.

10. Can i apply for an Enhanced Driver's License/identifiation Card or REAL ID at the Wright County License Bureau?

12. How do I know which type of license I will need?

Minnesota has a few identification options for residents to choose from. 

•  Standard driver's license or ID card.
• Enhanced driver's license or ID card (EDL/EID).
• REAL ID - compliant driver's license or ID card.

Determining which type of license or ID card works best depends on what a person needs to use the card for.

Standard Driver's License or ID Card

• A standard license or ID card can be used for federal purposes, including boarding domestic flights, until Oct. 1, 2020.
• After October 2020, these won't be acceptable forms of identification for domestic air travel or federal use.
• Valid for identification purposes.
• Valid for lawful driving privileges.

Enhanced Driver's License or ID Card

•  Can be used for domestic air travel and to access federal facilities now and will continue to be acceptable forms of identification for federal purposes even after October 2020.
• Can be used as U.S. border crossing documents.
• Only issued to U.S. citizens.
• Valid for identification purposes.
• Valid for lawful driving privileges.

REAL ID Compliant Driver's Licenses or ID Card

• REAL ID driver's licenses or ID cards can be used for domestic air travel and to access federal facilities such as military bases and nuclear power plants.
• Issued to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens.
• Cannot be used as boarder crossing documents.
• Valid for identification purposes.
• Valid for lawful driving privileges.

Additional Information for EDL/REAL ID applications

• You must provide original documents or documents certified by the agency that issued them.  Digital documents shown on your phone or other electronic device will not be accepted.
• If your name has changed, you must submit proof of each name change.  Acceptable proof includes a certified copy of a marriage certificate, divorce decree or dissolution or marriage, or a court-ordered name change.
• Two different document types must be submitted for PROOF OF MINNESOTA RESIDENCY.  A P.O. Box will not be accepted as an address for proof of Minnesota Residency.
• If you have not updated your name change with the Social Security Administration, you must do so prior to applying for a Real ID.
• Laminated documents or documents with any alterations of erasures will not be accepted.

13. How early can I renew my driver's license?

• Over 21: Anytime in the year of renewal
• Under 21: No more than three weeks before the expiration date.
• If you are under 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian with you.  The legal guardian will need to provide legal papers to sign for you.

14. Can I get a permit at this location?

Yes, you can apply for your permit at this location if you have already been to a Driver's License Exam Station to take your written permit test.

15. What should I bring with me for my first time application?

1. Proof that you have completed and passed the knowledge test.
2. Two forms of Proper Identification Documents.
3. Corrective lenses (if needed).
4. Parent or legal guardian (if you are under age 18).  If a parent/Legal Guardian is not available to come in with you at the time of applications, you can pick up an application and take it with you to obtain their notarized signature and return to complete your transaction.

16. What do I need to bring in order to renew my Commercial Driver's License (CDL)?

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Class A, B or C)

• You need to provide proof of citizenship when you renew a CDL.  The most common documents you can provide are an unexpired U.S. Passport, or a Certified Birth Certificate.

17. I have an out of state Driver's License, can I transfer it to Minnesota at your location?

No.  Anyone new to Minnesota or returning to Minnesota with a Driver's License from another state has to take the written exam at a Driver's License Exam Station.

Please ensure that you have Proper Identification Documents.

18. Can I pay a Minnesota or Out of State fine at your office?

No.  The fine has to be paid in the same county that you received your ticket in.  (Wright County tickets are paid at the Wright County Court Administration Office).
